Kenya’s ‘god’ who demanded Sh3 Billion: The Rise and Fall of Jehovah Wanyonyi

By Our Correspondent,Bungoma.

Jehovah Wanyonyi, a controversial cult leader who declared himself the Almighty god, lived for decades surrounded by devoted followers in western Kenya

He commanded loyalty, wealth, and fear.

Wanyonyi was born in 1925 in Chemororoch village, Uasin Gishu County and founded his sect in 1956 before escalating his claims in 1960, when he proclaimed himself the one true God of the Bible.

He described Jesus Christ as his son and referred to Mount Elgon as “Mount Zion.”

Over the years, his influence grew, particularly in Bungoma County, where by the early 1980’s he reportedly commanded more than 7,000 followers, largely from the Luhya community.

Many believers are said to have sold land, livestock, and personal belongings, surrendering the proceeds to him in exchange for blessings, healing, and salvation.

Wanyonyi lived a modest daily routine despite his grand claims.

In the past interview with DNK-International his wife Sura said that he would begin his day with tea or porridge before donning ceremonial robes and sitting on a throne to receive followers bearing gifts.

Prayer, she insisted, was unnecessary. “Pray to whom? He is the Almighty,” she reportedly said.

The self proclaimed god maintained a large household, with about 25 wives and over 100 children.

His followers believed he was immortal and held power over life and death.

In a dramatic turn in 2001, Wanyonyi demanded Sh3 billion from the Kenyan government, threatening to curse the nation if his demand was not met.

The government ignored the claim, which further fueled public debate about his influence and mental state.

Despite repeated claims of immortality, Wanyonyi’s health deteriorated in later years.

He died on August 18, 2015, at the age of 90 in Bungoma County after a prolonged illness.

His death contradicted his long held assertion that he could not die, leaving many followers disillusioned, while others insisted he would resurrect.

Even in death, the legacy of Jehovah Wanyonyi remains a striking example of the power of belief, charisma, and the vulnerability of communities seeking hope and healing.
