Lens of Hope: Ailing Veteran Photojournalist Njiru Rukenya Makes Sh1.4 Million Plea for Life Changing Surgery

By Our Reporter,Nairobi

Former Nation Media Group photojournalist Nicholas Njiru Rukenya, a once vibrant storyteller who spent years capturing Kenya through his lens, is now appealing to the public for financial support as he battles a debilitating health condition that has left him struggling to walk.

Rukenya, who served as a photojournalist at Nation Media Group for over a decade between May 1993 and March 2006, was widely recognized for his compelling visual storytelling, particularly his contributions to the popular Young Nation column in the Sunday Nation.

His work took him across the country documenting lives, communities, and untold stories, earning him respect among peers and readers alike.

After leaving the Nation newsroom, he continued his career in visual media, taking up the role of Head of Photography at Oakland Media Services before later working with Ginger Ink Film Production as a Location Unit Manager.

He also ventured into freelance photography, focusing on travel, portraiture, landscapes, and events.

Today, the veteran photojournalist’s life has taken a difficult turn.

Rukenya has been ailing for some time, with his condition worsening to the point where he now relies on crutches for mobility.

The illness has significantly limited his ability to work and carry out daily activities, leaving him in urgent need of medical intervention.

He is now seeking to raise Sh1.4 million to undergo a critical hip replacement surgery that could restore his mobility and give him a chance to regain independence.

Friends, former colleagues, and well wishers have rallied behind him, urging Kenyans to support a man who once dedicated his life to telling the nation’s stories.

In an emotional appeal circulating online, supporters have called on the public to step in during his time of need, reminding Kenyans of the impact of collective goodwill.

“Life, truth be told, there comes a time when God moves through friends’ goodwill. It is a time when being proactive and not reactive matters to help someone in need. And God is good because He moves the hearts of men to do His bidding. Please watch this clip and see how God could move you to help in this situation. Thanks and blessings,” reads part of the appeal message by Rukenya.

Rukenya’s plight has also sparked conversations about the welfare of retired journalists and creatives, many of whom face financial and medical challenges after years of service to the industry.

For now, hope rests in the generosity of Kenyans and the power of community to help one of their own stand and walk again.
