Nyandarua County CID boss John Rioba on Monday evening lost his life following a nine vehicle road traffic accident at Karai area along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway in Naivasha.

According to police reports, the fatal crash occurred at about 4:50 p.m. and was later recorded at Naivasha Police Station.

Rioba was at the time of the accident driving an Isuzu D-Max vehicle.

He sustained serious injuries during the collision and was rushed to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police investigations indicate that the accident occurred when a Sinotruk truck, registration number KDV 548X, which was travelling from Nairobi towards Nakuru lost control and rammed into a Toyota Land Cruiser that was moving in the same direction.

The impact caused the Land Cruiser to veer off course and cross into the opposite lane, where it collided with seven other vehicles travelling towards Nairobi.

The chain-reaction crash involved a Fuso lorry, two Toyota Hiace vehicles, a Toyota Sienta, a Toyota Prado, a Mitsubishi lorry and the Isuzu D-Max driven by the deceased officer.

Two passengers of European origin who were travelling in the Land Cruiser sustained minor injuries, while Regina Chumba, a Member of the County Assembly from Uasin Gishu County, complained of chest pains and was among those taken for medical attention.

In the aftermath of the accident, a Ceska pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition belonging to the deceased officer was recovered from members of the public by an officer who happened to be at the scene.

All nine vehicles involved in the accident suffered extensive damage and have been detained at Naivasha Police Station pending inspection by traffic investigators.

The driver of the Sinotruk truck reportedly fled the scene immediately after the crash and is being sought by police Police.

Officers visited the scene, documented evidence and launched investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the accident.
The case remains under investigation.
