Personality of the day:Kanze Dena: From KBC,Citizen newsreader to Uhuru Kenyatta’s trusted voice at State House and in retirement

By Our Reporter,Nairobi.

When former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s position on the future of the Jubilee Party was made public on Tuesday this week,it was once again the familiar voice of Kanze Dena-Mararo that delivered the message.

Dena, who serves in the communication team of the retired president as his spokesperson released a statement in which Kenyatta said he was ready to relinquish the leadership of the Jubilee Party following a court ruling touching on the eligibility of a former president to continue holding formal party leadership.

The latest assignment underlines the remarkable journey of a woman who moved from reading news on radio and television to becoming one of Kenya’s most recognisable presidential communicators.

Kellen Beatrice Kanze Dena -Mararo, popularly known as Kanze Dena, was born in 1980 in Kwale County and hails from Mijikenda community.

She was raised largely by her mother after her parents separated and grew up in different parts of the country, including Kwale, Nairobi and Embu.

Dena attended Kianjokoma Primary School in Embu, now known as St Matthews Mixed Boarding Primary School, before joining Kieni Girls High School, where she completed her secondary education in 1997.

Interestingly, journalism was not her first career choice.

Dena initially wanted to train as a medical professional and made several attempts to join Kenya Medical Training College.

After failing to secure admission, she changed direction and enrolled at the Foundation College of Professional Studies, where she studied Journalism and Mass Communication.

Her journalism career began at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), where she undertook her training and worked as a Swahili newsreader before moving into television news.

She spent about six years at KBC, developing the skills that would later make her one of the country’s best-known television anchors.

Dena later on joined Citizen TV, where she became a household name.

Her partnership with fellow journalist Lulu Hassan on the popular Swahili bulletin Nipashe Wikendi made the two among the most recognisable faces in Kenyan television news.

At Citizen TV, Dena rose beyond anchoring to take on senior newsroom responsibilities, including news production and direction.

Her calm presentation, command of Kiswahili and ability to communicate difficult subjects in an accessible manner helped build her reputation as a formidable broadcaster.

In June 2018, she left Citizen TV for State House after President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed her Deputy State House Spokesperson and Deputy Head of the Presidential Strategic Communications Unit (PSCU).

She was later elevated to State House Spokesperson and Head of PSCU, succeeding Manoah Esipisu who was appointed as Kenya’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom (UK).

Her responsibilities included presidential messaging, media relations, digital communication, research, branding and explaining government programmes and policies to the public.

The move transformed Dena from a familiar television personality into one of the principal voices of the Kenyan presidency.

She regularly addressed journalists, issued statements and represented the presidency at official events.

Her use of Kiswahili during presidential briefings was particularly memorable as her fans told DNK-International, given her television background and the large audience that had followed her career from the newsroom.

Dena remained at the centre of President Kenyatta’s communication machinery until the end of his second term in 2022.

She subsequently continued working with the former president and has served in his post-presidency communication structure, helping communicate Kenyatta’s position on political and national issues.

Her continued association with Kenyatta demonstrates the level of trust developed during her years at State House.

In August, for example, she publicly dismissed as fake a statement circulating online that purported to represent Uhuru’s position on a possible meeting with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua who is also DCP party leader.

She simply described the document as “Fake news” while warning the public against treating unauthorised statements as official communication.

Dena’s career has not been without memorable personal moments.

Her emotional departure from Citizen TV, particularly her farewell alongside Lulu Hassan, remains one of the most remembered exits by a Kenyan television personality.

She has also spoken openly about difficult experiences in her private life, including becoming a mother while still young and losing her first child.

The death of her mother in 2007 was another deeply painful experience.

Dena once reflected that she wished her mother had lived to see her become a successful television journalist, recalling how much her mother had wanted her to succeed.

In March 2019, Dena married Nick Mararo who is said to be eyeing Nyeri senate seat in 2027 in a private ceremony at Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

The wedding was attended by close family members and friends, among them her longtime media colleague Lulu Hassan.

Mararo’s political ambitions have given the couple another connection to Kenya’s increasingly competitive political arena.

In July 2022, Kenyatta conferred on Dena, the Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS), recognising her service.

She was also among the former president’s officials visibly emotional during his farewell from the Kenya Defence Forces in September of that year.

Away from the cameras, Dena has described retirement from the intense media spotlight as an opportunity to rediscover herself after years of constant public attention.

Her transition from celebrity news anchor to presidential spokesperson and later communication official in the Office of the Fourth President has therefore been unusual even by the standards of Kenya’s media industry.

Her memorable public statements have often reflected the discipline expected of an official presidential communicator.

Whether defending the administration’s position, correcting misinformation or delivering Uhuru Kenyatta’s latest political message, Dena has generally maintained a measured and restrained communication style.

Her latest role in announcing Kenyatta’s readiness to relinquish Jubilee Party leadership adds another significant chapter to her career.

At 46, Kanze Dena has already worked in three influential communication environments, KBC, Citizen TV and State House, before becoming one of the key voices through which a former Kenyan president communicates with the country.

From a young woman who once hoped to become a medical professional, to a KBC newsreader, celebrated Citizen TV anchor, State House spokesperson and trusted voice of a retired president, Dena’s career remains one of Kenya’s notable journeys from the newsroom to the highest levels of government communication.
