Police have arrested two suspects and recovered more than 1,000 rolls of bhang during an anti-drug operation conducted in Nairobi’s Korogocho area on Saturday evening.
According to police, officers from Korogocho Police Station were on routine patrol when they received a tip-off from members of the public that a motorcycle was transporting bhang towards the Kisumu Dogo area.
The officers pursued the motorcycle and intercepted it in the Nyayo area.
Police said the motorcycle was carrying two pillion passengers with sacks suspected to contain bhang. As officers attempted to arrest the suspects, one of them fled into a nearby house while a group of youths gathered and began pelting the officers with stones.
The officers responded by firing warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd before calling for reinforcement.
During the operation, police arrested Brian Onyi, who was found in possession of 464 rolls of bhang, and Emmily Akinyi, who was found with 538 rolls.
Officers also impounded a Boxer 125 motorcycle, registration number KMHB 651E, which is believed to have been used to transport the narcotics.
Police confirmed that no injuries were reported during the incident.
The two suspects are expected to be charged with trafficking in narcotic drugs, possession of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, and resisting lawful arrest.
Meanwhile, investigators have launched a manhunt for another suspect who escaped during the operation.
