Tension at Pwani University as suspected goons disrupt road works

By Our Correspondent,Kilifi.

Operations at Pwani University in Kilifi County were temporarily disrupted on Sunday after a group of suspected goons stormed a construction site and later staged protests that caused traffic disruption along the major highway.

According to an incident report, the unrest was reported at around 11:00 a.m., when the university’s security team, working alongside a contractor at the institution’s TVET site, was carrying out barricading works along the Old Ganze Road.

The team was using soil from the site when they were confronted by about 10 individuals believed to have been incited by a local politician.

To prevent escalation, the university halted the works and advised students to avoid the area for their safety.

The situation later intensified when the group lit bonfires near the university’s main gate along the Mombasa–Malindi Road, causing a traffic snarl-up.

Motorists were forced to seek alternative routes as police diverted vehicles away from the affected section.

Riot police were subsequently deployed to the scene and managed to disperse the group and restore calm.

Normal operations has since resumed, although security personnel remain on high alert to prevent further disturbances.

Investigations into the incident, including claims of political incitement, are ongoing.
