Kenya is mourning the death of distinguished scholar and former Moi University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raphael Munavu, a towering educationist and reformist who passed away on April 26, 2026, while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital.
His death brings to a close a remarkable career that spanned over four decades in academia, public service and national policy.
Prof.Munavu was born on August 1, 1949 and rose from humble beginnings to become one of Kenya’s most influential intellectuals in science and education.
He pursued Chemistry in the United States, earning a Bachelor’s degree from Kalamazoo College, a Master’s from Wayne State University, and a PhD from the University of Detroit, specializing in organic, environmental and industrial chemistry.

Upon returning to Kenya in the 1970’s, he joined the University of Nairobi as a lecturer, steadily rising through the academic ranks to become a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Chemistry.
Over the years, he held key leadership positions including Dean of the Faculty of Science and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration and Finance).
He later served as Vice-Chancellor of Egerton University before taking up the helm at Moi University between 1998 and 2002, where he spearheaded major reforms, expanded access to higher education through privately sponsored programmes, and strengthened institutional governance.
Prof. Munavu’s influence extended beyond university administration.
A prolific scholar, he published over 90 research papers and supervised numerous postgraduate students, contributing significantly to scientific advancement and policy discourse in Kenya.
His expertise saw him take up critical roles in national institutions, including serving as Chairman of the Kenya National Examinations Council from 2000 to 2010, where he oversaw key examination reforms, and as Chair of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences for nearly two decades.
In public service, he was also a commissioner at the Commission on Revenue Allocation and chaired multiple boards and advisory bodies, playing a central role in shaping Kenya’s governance and development frameworks.

At the time of his demise, he was serving as Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Konza Technopolis Development Authority, where he oversaw the growth of Konza Technopolis, Kenya’s flagship smart city project aimed at positioning the country as a regional hub for innovation and technology.
In 2022, President William Ruto appointed him to chair the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms, placing him at the center of efforts to review and align the Competency-Based Curriculum with national development goals.
Under his leadership, the taskforce conducted extensive nationwide consultations and delivered recommendations that continue to shape Kenya’s education system.
Prof. Munavu shared a long standing relationship with President Ruto, having taught him during his university days, with the head of State later describing him as a mentor and a transformative intellectual.
In his tribute, President Ruto praised him as a dedicated patriot whose commitment to education and public service left an indelible mark on the nation.
A recipient of national honours including the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) and Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS), Prof. Munavu was widely respected for his integrity, quiet leadership and firm belief that education is the foundation of national development.
He was known for consistently emphasizing that meaningful progress must be anchored in knowledge, science and innovation.
From lecture halls to national policy corridors, Prof.Munavu’s life was defined by service, intellect and reform.
His legacy lives on in Kenya’s universities, institutions, and the generations of leaders and students he mentored, cementing his place as one of the country’s most influential educationists.
