A taxi driver has narrowly escaped an attempted carjacking in Nyeri County after overpowering four suspected criminals who had handcuffed him during a botched robbery.

According to police, the incident occurred yesterday evening at Katiki Village within Mathira.

The victim, William Kariuki Waitheru, a taxi driver operating in Karatina town, reported that he had been hired by an unknown man customer carrying a bag containing bread.

The customer requested to be taken to Katiki area, claiming he needed to pick up his sick mother from home.

Police said the suspect sat in the front passenger seat and directed the driver towards Mukurweini.

Upon reaching the vicinity of River Tana Bridge, the customer instructed the driver to divert onto a murram road leading to Katiki Village.

After driving approximately 300 metres along the road, the driver encountered three men standing by the roadside.

The passenger then ordered him to stop.

The three men immediately entered the vehicle and reportedly handcuffed the driver in what appeared to be a coordinated carjacking attempt.

However, the victim managed to overpower the suspects, escape from their grip while retaining possession of his vehicle keys, and raised an alarm.

Members of the public responded promptly, forcing the suspects to flee towards the Mukurweini–Karatina highway.

The driver later contacted friends who escorted him to Tumutumu Police Post, where officers assisted in removing the handcuffs and recorded the incident.

Police recovered one handcuff and four loaves of bread believed to have been purchased from Mathai Supermarket.

The items have been retained as exhibits to aid investigations.
